Year of Stories 2022

This is Scotland's Year of Stories 2022 and we are taking you on a journey to one of the forgotten corners of Scotland. Dumfries and Galloway is a special area with many links to authors past and present.

The Year of Stories will celebrate and showcase Scotland's wealth of treasured and iconic stories and storytellers from classic to contemporary.

Sublime Scotland plans to really get involved with this great theme of 2022 with a week exploring the wonderful region of Dumfries and Galloway very soon.

Book Town in The Year of Stories 2022

Why not visit Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town? There you will find an amazing number of second-hand bookshops, places to find a hidden treasure or even bump into a famous author reading a story.

We plan to spend some time in Wigtown in February and will keep everyone posted on the places we discover.

Robert Burns

Some time ago we visited the birthplace of Rabbie Burns, Scotland's National Poet from the 18th century. Many people around the globe have visited the village of Alloway where he was born in 1759. However, less people are aware of the fantastic Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries.

Robert Burns spent the final years of his life in Dumfries and the centre's fantastic exhibition has many fascinating original manuscripts and belongings of the poet. We look forward to seeing the impressive model of this market town as it was in the 1790's when Burns was alive.

JM Barrie

From the ages of 13 - 18 the famous author of Peter Pan, JM Barrie, played in the gardens of the fabulous Georgian House at Moat Brae. The unique fun and experiences he had in Dumfries would in time strongly influence Barrie's very successful writing career.

Here he joined the Gordon Brothers Pirate Crew at Moat Brae and then went on to contribute his first articles to a secret magazine called The Clown. Clearly he was destined to be a great writer but did he ever believe his children's story of Peter Pan would still be a favourite with children more than 150 years later.
